What will be uncovered in your DNA test? Many people take a DNA test to definitively determine their parentage for inheritance or child custody, and then uncover a horrible secret—they find that they have been the victims of paternity fraud.
What is fertility fraud?
Fertility fraud happens when a doctor or another worker at a fertility clinic uses their sperm to impregnate a person without the person’s knowledge. This happens more often than people would care to believe. Often, doctors are found in a single instance of substitution by their biological children after DNA testing. However, other doctors have been found guilty of many cases—one found a doctor with at least 60 victims of fertility fraud.
In the past few years, more and more of those cases have been coming up with the modern ease of DNA testing. As such, the US is increasing the laws and regulations around fertility fraud. Texas is on the forefront of this movement, and other states are also closing the loopholes on fertility fraud legislation.
More and more adults whose parents went to a fertility clinic are going to DNA testing to see who their parents are. As the number of discovered fertility fraud cases continues to rise, lawmakers will hopefully continue to support legislation that protects patients who reach out to infertility clinics in a time of emotional and physical vulnerability.
